Language acquisition in the adult life
Today according to the World Bank the life expectancy in the world is an average of 72 years. In Brazil it is already 75. By analyzing this number that has grown gradually over time, there are some studies that ascribe this advance to several factors and one stands out among them? the preservation of the brain.
It is normal that, in the same way that our body gets old, the brain also does, but did you know that there are some habits that “boost” our brain, delaying this process? These habits are very powerful and delay this organ’s aging, potentiating not only the longevity, but also a life of quality. Therefore one of the most interesting ways of exercising the brain is learning a new language.
Although there is a prejudice that makes older people sometimes afraid or incapable if learning languages after a certain age, we can state that it is only a stigma that should be overcome. Actually the best moment to learn a new thing is exactly when you can enjoy this process and all it has to offer. In other words, there is no age limit for this to happen. The acquisition of a new language is an excellent challenge that contributes not only to breaking this fake paradigm but still brings with it benefits that keep the mind active because the bigger the diversity of stimulations, “sharpener” will be the cognitive abilities.
Finally, whether it is a hobby or the desire to reach new personal or professional goals, the four skills developed when we learn a new language - speaking, listening, writing and reading - help us to also improve the communication in our native language and allow us to live new experiences and embrace our social connections because every language carries different cultures with it.
We cannot forget that the mind controls our body, therefore we always need to challenge it. Quoting the British novelist George Eliot: “ It is never too late to be what you might have been”. Learn a new language! Open your mind to a new world!
